Frederick Strider History
Coach Debbie and Coach Charlie founded the Frederick Striders Track & Field Club in 1989. She has over 40 years of experience in the sport as a competitor and coach. In 1964 Debbie went to Tokyo, Japan as a member of the U.S. Olympic team. In 1965 the U.S. State Department sent her to Australia as one of its athletic goodwill ambassadors. She then went to Europe as a member of the U.S. team competing in indoor track meets in Poland and West Germany – all of this while she was still 17. She set world records in the indoor 60 yard dash and outdoor 100 yard dash.
In 1979 she was the first Frederick county female inducted into the Alvin G. Quinn (Fred. Co.) Sports Hall of Fame. She was also inducted into the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. Over the past 10 years she has received AAU Coach of the Year Award at least 5 times. In 2010, she received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. She was selected from the Frederick High School Class of 1965 for embodiment of the Frederick High School motto, "Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve". A plaque will be on permanent display at the entrance of the Frederick High School track. This is the second year that the school has given this award to alumni |
